Local Referendum Party - this is an idea that we can do without the need for party politics in the UK at least to some degree. It aims to prove that party politics are a thing of the past and this initiative engages the population in government.
This is what's involved;
- All votes in Parliament will be parsed to the local constituency to vote on,
- Voting will be done through email, text messaging, web voting or snailmail,
- The LRP MP has no political views of their own,
- The LRP MP will represent all local concerns in Parliament just like all regular MPs do.
- Where there are opposing local concerns these are put to a local vote and the decision is taken forward as above.
The idea grew from living in Epsom, Surrey. There we have had idenpendent control of the local council by the Epsom and Ewell Residents Association for over 70 years. So proof is there that politics is not required in local decision making. The debate is whether you need [party] politics at a national level. My personal view is that a mixture of independents with a reduction in size of the three main parties would increase sensible debate and improvement in Parliament.
